Swinging the Traditional Ride Cymbal Pattern

The ’traditional’ ride cymbal pattern is a ride cymbal motive employed in jazz drumming, and more specifically in swing. The swing ride cymbal pattern, which can be performed in several variations and can vary from drummer to drummer, is overlaid with concurrently played independent snare drum, bass drum and hi-hat rhythms. In jazz the swing ride cymbal pattern is absolutely essential.
